Sustainability at the Austria eXtreme Triathlon
The Austria eXtreme Triathlon is not only a challenge for athletes, but also a pioneer in sustainability within the world of sports. For the past four years, we have consistently implemented measures to minimize our ecological footprint and serve as a role model for other sporting events.
Stainless Steel Medals
One of our most innovative and sustainable initiatives involves the medals awarded to participants. Instead of using short-lived materials, our medals are made from high-quality stainless steel.
If a medal is not awarded in a given year, it is never discarded. Instead, it is polished and re-lasered so it can be reused the following year. This ensures that no medal goes to waste and that the material cycle remains fully sustainable.
Reducing Plastic Waste
At our aid stations, we consciously avoid the use of plastic tableware. Instead, we rely on:
Wooden bowls:
Made from natural, biodegradable materials and reusable whenever possible.
Recyclable cups:
Our cups are produced from recyclable materials, helping us actively reduce unnecessary plastic waste and conserve resources.
Waste Prevention
The main goal of our sustainability strategy is simple: produce as little waste as possible.
Before the race, all participants are clearly informed that littering in nature is strictly prohibited. If an athlete violates this rule, not only the athlete but the entire team will be disqualified from the competition. This strict policy has proven highly effective and promotes a respectful attitude toward the environment.
Sustainable nutrition:
We also focus on sustainability in athlete catering by avoiding unnecessary packaging and offering regional and environmentally friendly products whenever possible.
Upcycling – Creativity Meets Sustainability
Upcycling is a creative and sustainable way of giving unused materials a new purpose. Unlike recycling, where materials are broken down into raw components, upcycling transforms existing items into something new with additional artistic or practical value.
Instead of discarding unused finisher shirts, artist Gerlinde Dengg transforms them into unique works of art. Through creative designs, the shirts gain a completely new function while remaining a meaningful memory of the event. This project not only saves resources but also creates a powerful and creative statement for sustainability.
Long-Term Goals
The Austria eXtreme Triathlon continues to work toward reducing its environmental impact year after year. We are constantly searching for innovative and sustainable solutions to further minimize the event’s CO₂ footprint.
Our Conclusion
Sustainability is deeply rooted in the philosophy of the Austria eXtreme Triathlon. From responsible resource management to waste prevention, our mission is to organize a sporting event that exists in harmony with nature.
Together with our athletes, supporters, and volunteers, we are setting an example for environmental protection and for a more conscious use of natural resources.
